Unraveling the Cobalt Market: Stability Amidst Shifting Sands

Cobalt Market Trends: A Snapshot of Stability and Future Projections

As of August 20, 2026, the global cobalt spot price demonstrated stability, holding firm at US$25.53 per pound, consistent with the previous month's figures. This period of steady pricing occurs as the market navigates crucial supply-side adjustments and anticipates future demand spikes.

Regulatory Adjustments and Looming Deficits

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a pivotal player in global cobalt supply, is reportedly evaluating potential reductions in its cobalt production quotas. This strategic move aims to rebalance the market if necessary, responding to evolving supply-demand dynamics. Concurrently, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has issued a forecast indicating an impending deficit in the cobalt market beginning in 2026. This shortage is largely attributed to anticipated stricter export controls from the DRC, which are expected to tighten the global supply significantly.

Corporate Triumphs: Strong Earnings Across the Cobalt Sector

Leading cobalt producers have reported robust financial performances for the first half of 2026. CMOC, a major industry participant, saw an impressive 86% increase in profit, coupled with a 43% rise in revenue. Similarly, Glencore's Group Adjusted EBITDA surged by 86% to US$10.1 billion. Huayou Cobalt also experienced substantial growth, with its attributable profit climbing by 68%. Umicore posted a remarkable 102.6% year-over-year increase in adjusted net profit, reaching €273 million. Japanese conglomerate Sumitomo reported an exceptional 220.5% year-over-year growth in attributable profit, totaling JPY87,935 million for the quarter ending June 30.

Strategic Investments and Project Financing

In a significant development for future supply, Chilean Cobalt has secured a US$375 million Letter of Interest from the US EXIM Bank. This crucial financial backing is designated to support the development of its La Cobaltera / El Cofre project located in northern Chile. This investment underscores the increasing global effort to diversify cobalt sources and secure raw materials essential for various high-tech industries.
