Following its recent disaffiliation from Microsoft and a period of restructuring, the esteemed game development studio, Double Fine, has unveiled its next significant project. The creators of the popular Psychonauts series are launching a Kickstarter initiative for the latest installment of their celebrated game jam event, known as Amnesia Fortnight. This exciting announcement was shared by CEO Tim Schafer during an interview on the Kinda Funny podcast.

Double Fine's Post-Microsoft Venture: Amnesia Fortnight 2026 Edition

The campaign, titled “Amnesia Fortnight 2026 - Indie Reboot: A Double Fine Productions Game Jam, Documentary and Kickstarter Campaign,” is set to commence on August 31st and will run throughout September. This unique event invites backers to actively participate in the creative process by selecting game ideas that will be developed into four distinct prototypes. Following their creation, the community will then vote on which of these prototypes will be evolved into a fully-fledged, albeit smaller-scale, game. Adding to the anticipation, 2 Player Productions, renowned for their critically acclaimed “Psychodyssey” documentary which chronicled the making of “Psychonauts 2,” will be on hand to capture the entire event for a new documentary series.

Double Fine has a rich history with its two-week game jams, having streamed previous iterations in 2012, 2014, 2017, and 2019. In past events, prototypes conceived during these creative sessions were made accessible through platforms like Humble Bundle. Notable titles such as “Costume Quest,” “Spacebase DK-9,” and “Headlander” have directly emerged from these jams. Furthermore, some jam concepts have even inspired segments within larger projects, including the distinctive Compton’s Cookout level featured in “Psychonauts 2.”

The announcement follows a challenging period for Double Fine. Last month, the studio was impacted by a significant round of layoffs and divestments orchestrated by Xbox, leading to its re-establishment as an independent entity from Microsoft. Subsequently, Double Fine itself underwent a painful but necessary restructuring, resulting in the layoff of 23 employees from its approximately 90-person team. Addressing these difficult decisions, CEO Tim Schafer stated, “Only the survival of our studio would ever make us consider such a painful action.”

Since its inception in 2000, Double Fine has cultivated a legacy of developing beloved games, including both installments of “Psychonauts,” “Brutal Legend,” and “Iron Brigade,” among others. Prior to its acquisition by Xbox Game Studios in 2019, the studio played a pivotal role in popularizing crowdfunding within the video game industry, notably achieving success with Kickstarter campaigns for “Broken Age” and the highly anticipated “Psychonauts 2.”

The announcement of Amnesia Fortnight 2026 signals Double Fine's resilience and its enduring commitment to innovative game development. By inviting the community to directly influence the creation process, the studio not only embraces a democratic approach to game design but also reinforces its identity as a creative powerhouse, even in the face of significant corporate shifts. This new venture not only promises exciting new game concepts but also underscores the studio's philosophy of transparency and community engagement, offering fans a unique glimpse into the intricate world of game creation.
