Funcom is set to significantly expand the universe of its survival MMO, Dune: Awakening, with the announcement of a free expansion. Following extensive overhauls to incorporate both solo and PvE experiences, the Norwegian studio is now ready to transport players to an entirely new region of Arrakis, offering a fresh perspective on survival in the iconic desert world.
Launching in December, the 'Blood and Ice' DLC will introduce the Polar Sink, a frigid northern map that dramatically alters the game's core survival mechanics. Instead of seeking shade from the relentless sun, players will now contend with extreme cold, necessitating the development of new technologies and strategies to find warmth. This new environment features two distinct biomes, the tundra and the more extreme icecap, both under the control of influential 'water shippers'. Players' primary goal will be to break the water shippers' monopoly, gaining access to crucial ice that can be used to cool their desert bases and boost resource production. This expansion promises around 35 hours of new progression, emphasizing ground-level survival, traversal challenges, temperature management, and combat.
The 'Blood and Ice' expansion, releasing on December 1, is part of Funcom's broader strategy to continuously evolve Dune: Awakening. In addition to the DLC, the game will see a cosmetics store launch, an offline single-player mode in November, and full cross-play support by January of next year. Funcom has committed to supporting and expanding the game through 2027, aligning with their recent decision to focus resources primarily on existing titles like Dune: Awakening and Conan Exiles.
The continuous development and expansion of games like Dune: Awakening highlight a commitment to fostering long-term engagement and community. By introducing diverse environments and evolving gameplay mechanics, developers can inspire players to adapt, innovate, and find new enjoyment in familiar worlds, ultimately enriching the gaming experience and pushing creative boundaries.
