Enhancing BOLD Stablecoin Stability and Adoption Through Liquidity Incentives

Nouriel RoubiniNouriel RoubiniAug 07, 2026

The Liquity Protocol's v2 stablecoin, known as BOLD, possesses a distinctive monetary framework, notably characterized by its innovative Protocol Incentivized Liquidity (PIL) feature. This mechanism allocates a quarter of v2's protocol revenue as an enduring budget for BOLD's liquidity. Despite this unique foundation and its positioning as 'The Ethereum Dollar'—a decentralized and unchangeable stablecoin—BOLD has experienced a slowdown in its supply expansion. A key factor contributing to this stagnation appears to be the inadequacy of the protocol's inherent redemption mechanism. While designed to restore BOLD's $1 price peg when it dips below, this mechanism has proven insufficient as the primary tool for reducing circulating BOLD supply, thereby hindering its widespread adoption as users grow cautious of potential redemption risks. The proposal outlined in this article aims to enhance BOLD's market regulation by establishing permanent liquidity and incorporating swap fee burns as an integral part of its public infrastructure.

The concept that market instability arises from the failure to regulate money through market processes is a foundational principle that underpins the current challenges faced by BOLD. Since its inception, BOLD has been lauded for its decentralized nature and its ambition to serve as a robust, immutable stablecoin. However, the theoretical strength has not fully translated into practical growth. The current redemption system, while sound in principle, activates only when BOLD trades below its peg, necessitating users to redeem BOLD for collateral, thus reducing supply. This reactive approach has not been effective enough to consistently manage supply fluctuations and address user concerns about potential losses during redemption periods. Consequently, this has led to a cautious stance among potential adopters, limiting the coin's utility and market penetration.

To overcome these hurdles, a comprehensive strategy has been put forth to bolster BOLD's stability and encourage greater user engagement. This strategy focuses on proactive liquidity management and value accrual. By dedicating a portion of the Protocol Incentivized Liquidity (PIL) to a permanent BOLD/LQTY pool, the protocol aims to create a robust and continuous buffer against price volatility. This constant injection of liquidity will help absorb excess BOLD in the market before its price deviates significantly from the $1 peg, reducing the reliance on the reactive redemption mechanism. Furthermore, the introduction of swap fee burns within this permanent liquidity pool is designed to provide a deflationary pressure on both BOLD and LQTY tokens. These burns directly remove tokens from circulation, thereby increasing scarcity and enhancing the long-term value proposition for both assets. This dual approach of proactive liquidity and token burning is anticipated to foster a more resilient and attractive ecosystem for BOLD, encouraging broader adoption and reinforcing its stability.

In essence, the proposed enhancements aim to transform BOLD into a more dynamic and self-regulating stablecoin. By establishing permanent liquidity and implementing swap fee burns, the protocol endeavors to create a more attractive and reliable asset for users. This strategic shift moves BOLD towards a model where its stability is more intrinsically linked to market dynamics and incentivizes participation through value accrual. The ultimate goal is to build a foundation that not only maintains BOLD's peg but also catalyzes its growth as a truly decentralized and trusted stablecoin in the broader cryptocurrency landscape, alleviating user concerns and fostering a vibrant, active community around the asset.
