FilmNation Entertainment's CEO, Glen Basner, a recipient of the prestigious Game Changer Award at the recent Zurich Summit, has unveiled an ambitious strategy to significantly enhance the company's production output in the coming year. This expansion reflects a renewed sense of optimism in the film industry, a sentiment Basner hasn't felt since before the global pandemic. The company plans to release a robust collection of films and a television series, focusing on maintaining high-quality standards while broadening their creative endeavors.

During the Zurich Summit, Basner shared insights into FilmNation's future, revealing a strategic shift towards increased production. He noted that after navigating a challenging period, the company has gained a clearer understanding of the industry landscape, leading to a confident push for growth. This year, FilmNation is set to produce four films and a television series, with an even more aggressive schedule planned for the following year, targeting four films already in pre-production and an additional three in development. This bold move underscores the company's commitment to delivering compelling cinematic experiences to a global audience.

Among FilmNation's highly anticipated releases for the current year are two films featured at the Zurich Film Festival: Florian Zeller's 'Bunker' and Peter Farrelly's 'I Play Rocky.' Basner expressed his profound admiration for Zeller, whose work he has long followed, even jokingly referring to him as his "filmmaker crush." 'Bunker,' which premiered to acclaim at Venice, is expected to resonate with mature audiences, a demographic Basner believes is underserved. He highlighted the film's potential to offer a thoughtful yet entertaining experience, drawing parallels to the success of titles like 'Nuremberg' in attracting this demographic. Basner firmly believes that older audiences possess both the time and financial capacity for cinematic outings, provided the right content is available.

Regarding 'I Play Rocky,' Basner conveyed his excitement for a film that evokes the nostalgic joy of the 1976 classic. He emphasized the inspiring narrative of Sylvester Stallone's self-belief during the making of 'Rocky' and how this story can motivate contemporary audiences to have faith in their own capabilities. Basner looks forward to celebrating this film, believing it offers a much-needed dose of inspiration in a world often dominated by negative news. He also reminisced about his collaboration with director Edward Berger on 'Conclave,' noting the importance of understanding a filmmaker's comprehensive vision beyond the literal script to transform a dialogue-heavy drama into a gripping political thriller, as was the case with 'Conclave' and its allusions to 'The Parallax View.'

Basner also touched upon the crucial partnership between filmmakers, FilmNation, and producers, advocating for open and honest communication, even when it involves constructive criticism. He stressed the importance of creative input and strategic discussions about distribution to ensure each film finds its ideal audience. He underlined that while the initial filmmaking process is inherently enjoyable, the true 'superpower' of FilmNation lies in its ability to effectively navigate diverse international markets, fostering collaborations with independent distributors worldwide. This unique ecosystem, driven by a shared passion for cinema, allows for invaluable cultural insights and a collective effort to bring impactful stories to screens globally, transcending geographical and cultural barriers.
