From Chill Hangouts to Design Director: Alan Nanes' Unconventional Path at Bethesda Game Studios

Bethesda Game Studios is marking its 40th anniversary, an occasion highlighted by the official reveal of "The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel." This milestone is also celebrated through a dedicated anniversary website, which features personal accounts and cherished memories from the studio's employees. Among these is the remarkable journey of Alan Nanes, now a design director, who initially joined Bethesda as an early full-time Quality Assurance (QA) tester, securing his position through an unconventional, yet personable, approach.

Nanes' engagement with Bethesda commenced during the creation of Morrowind, where his close ties with several developers allowed him to frequently visit the studio. He recounted these early days as a "Wild West" period, where casual interactions and playing multiplayer games with friends eventually caught the attention of Todd Howard. This led to an invitation to test their upcoming game. These informal testing sessions evolved, drawing in other developers who valued his feedback, leading to design discussions and modifications based on his input. Nanes recalled contributing significantly, earning him a mention in the Morrowind manual, and eventually, he was offered a formal full-time QA role, a testament to the value of his presence and insights.

While Nanes' career trajectory from QA to quest designer for Oblivion and later lead companions designer for Starfield reflects a storybook ascent, the broader landscape for QA professionals at Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax, has been more turbulent. Concerns over pay, career progression, and workload culminated in the QA workers at ZeniMax voting to unionize in 2022, establishing ZeniMax Workers United - CWA. This union became the largest of its kind in the video game industry. Despite contract negotiations with Microsoft facing prolonged delays, leading to a strike authorization vote in April 2025, a significant agreement was ultimately ratified in June 2025. This unionization proved crucial when subsequent layoffs occurred in July 2026, enabling the union to negotiate beneficial severance terms for its affected members.

Alan Nanes' journey from casual tester to design director at Bethesda exemplifies how passion and genuine engagement can open unexpected career doors in the gaming industry. His personal narrative, intertwined with the recent unionization efforts at ZeniMax, underscores the evolving dynamics within the industry. It highlights the importance of recognizing the contributions of all team members, from casual interactions that shape a game's early development to the organized advocacy that ensures fair treatment and professional growth for every worker. This story stands as a beacon of individual success and collective empowerment, reminding us that every role, no matter how small it seems, is vital to creating groundbreaking experiences and fostering a just workplace.
