The Global Citizen Festival, an annual advocacy music event traditionally held in Central Park to coincide with the United Nations General Assembly, has been canceled due to a strong nor'easter. The storm is expected to bring heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and coastal flooding to the region.
Safety Concerns Prioritized by Organizers
Officials from Global Citizen announced the cancellation on Friday afternoon, following consultations with New York City authorities and its parks department. They stated that the forecasted dangerous conditions would make it impossible to ensure the safety of the tens of thousands of attendees, performers, crew, vendors, partners, and staff, as well as the event's extensive equipment. This marks the first cancellation in the festival's 14-year history, a decision not taken lightly after exploring numerous contingencies.
Star-Studded Lineup Affected
The festival was slated to feature a diverse array of musical talent, including Lauryn Hill joined by Wyclef Jean, Lenny Kravitz, John Legend, Lainey Wilson, Shaboozey, Tomorrow X Together, Victoria Monét, Yeonjun, Yoshiki, and Alicia Keys, among others. The organization plans to donate all food prepared for the event to local charitable groups. Full refunds for tickets are currently being processed.
Widespread Event Cancellations Across the Region
The Global Citizen Festival is one of several events impacted by the impending nor'easter. Ed Sheeran's concerts at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, were also called off. Additionally, the All Things Go musical festival in New York announced its cancellation just hours before its opening, citing severe weather conditions and prioritizing the safety of its audience, artists, and crew.
Global Citizen's Message to Its Supporters
In a detailed statement, Global Citizen expressed its regret but reiterated that the safety of all involved was paramount. Despite the cancellation, the organization highlighted the significant impact achieved by its supporters over the past six weeks, with 3.5 million actions resulting in $208.8 million in commitments to various global initiatives. These efforts are expected to benefit over 9.5 million people by supporting education and assisting vulnerable communities. The organization affirmed its commitment to returning to Central Park next year.
Commitments and Impact Despite Setback
Even with the festival's cancellation, the collective efforts of Global Citizens have yielded substantial results. Over $208.8 million in financial commitments have been secured, aimed at supporting educational access for more than two million children and aiding 7.5 million individuals, including smallholder farmers, women, youth, and indigenous communities. Notable contributions include $151.6 million from Ireland and Canada for education, and support from various countries and foundations for small farming enterprises.
