Prominent entertainment journalist Kyle Buchanan has transitioned from his role at The New York Times to independently launch a new video podcast. Collaborating with Acast, Buchanan’s new show, “The Kyle Buchanan Show,” aims to deliver insightful conversations and exclusive interviews within the Hollywood sphere. This move marks a significant shift for the acclaimed reporter, who built a strong reputation covering the film industry and awards season.
After a notable tenure as a pop culture reporter and awards season columnist for The New York Times since 2018, Kyle Buchanan concluded his work with the newspaper on a Friday. Shortly thereafter, the announcement came confirming his collaboration with Acast to debut “The Kyle Buchanan Show,” a video podcast, in October. Acast will provide comprehensive support for the podcast, handling advertising, brand partnerships, and distribution.
The new podcast is designed to offer regular content, with episodes airing twice weekly. Tuesdays will feature “The Panel,” where two to three rotating industry guests will engage in extensive discussions on the most current and engaging Hollywood narratives. Fridays will introduce “The Profile,” presenting intimate one-on-one conversations with leading figures from the entertainment industry. The show will be accessible on major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, in both audio and video formats.
Buchanan expressed his enthusiasm for the new format, stating that “nothing beats a real conversation” in today’s media landscape, which is often saturated with brief, superficial content. He also conveyed his commitment to providing “access, insight, and A-list guests” and believes there is a strong demand from both audiences and talent for profound discussions. Buchanan aims for his show to offer an authentic, insider’s view of Hollywood, delivering a perspective that industry professionals and fans can trust.
During his time at The New York Times, Buchanan interviewed a wide array of notable personalities, including Nicole Kidman, Michael B. Jordan, Jennifer Lawrence, and Brad Pitt. His responsibilities predominantly involved covering the awards season as “The Projectionist” awards columnist. Beyond his journalism, Buchanan also authored the acclaimed bestseller, “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road,” an extensive oral history based on over 130 interviews, which garnered significant praise.
A native of Southern California, Buchanan has spent his entire life in the region, attending USC. His journalistic excellence has been recognized with awards, including being named journalist of the year by the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards in 2021. Before his role at the Times, he served as a senior editor at New York Magazine’s Vulture. Acast’s existing roster of podcasts includes popular titles such as Giggly Squad and The Comment Section With Drew Afualo.
This new endeavor represents a fresh chapter for Buchanan, allowing him to explore deeper narratives and provide unique insights into the world of film and celebrity through a dynamic video podcast format. His established reputation and network within Hollywood are expected to draw a significant audience to his new platform.
