Leading Semiconductor Equipment Firms: An Expert's Perspective

Fareed ZakariaFareed ZakariaAug 11, 2026

In the dynamic realm of semiconductor manufacturing, three prominent companies—Lam Research, KLA, and Applied Materials—have been identified by market expert Jim Cramer as critical enablers in resolving the ongoing scarcity of data center memory. These enterprises are instrumental in supplying the sophisticated machinery required for chip production, playing a foundational role in the technological landscape. Cramer's analysis underscores their intrinsic value and robust leadership, positioning them as cornerstones of the American semiconductor sector. The increasing investment by hedge funds in these firms during the first quarter of 2026 further validates their significance and growth potential.

During an August 6 broadcast of CNBC's Mad Money, Jim Cramer drew attention to the significant constraint in data center memory supply. He posited that investors should direct their focus towards the companies that engineer the equipment for semiconductor fabrication. Cramer specifically singled out Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: LRCX), KLA Corporation (NASDAQ: KLAC), and Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT), labeling them as the technological backbone of the United States. He articulated that while investing in memory producers or the companies that utilize memory can be volatile, owning the entities that manufacture the machinery for memory production offers unparalleled consistency and value due to assured demand and strong financial health. He famously referred to these three companies as the "semiconductor capital equipment troika."

Cramer also delved into the leadership aspects of these firms, acknowledging the challenge of selecting a single frontrunner given the exceptional management teams across all three. He pointed to his personal ties and the proven capabilities of the executives as key factors distinguishing these companies. He shared his partiality towards Lam Research, influenced by its CEO Tim Archer, who emerged from the leadership lineage of Rick Hill, the former CEO of Novellus, which later merged with Lam. Cramer further lauded Gary Dickerson, CEO of Applied Materials, as a vocal advocate for the industry, emphasizing that the collective intellectual property of these companies forms the true foundation of the American semiconductor supply chain. He firmly asserted that these three organizations represent America's competitive edge, particularly against claims of technological superiority from other nations, such as China, in the semiconductor domain.

Despite Cramer's endorsement of all three companies as prime investment opportunities driven by memory demand, an examination of hedge fund positions and valuation metrics reveals distinct characteristics within the trio. In the first quarter of 2026, smart money demonstrated increased confidence across the board. Applied Materials, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMAT) led in institutional sentiment, with 138 hedge funds holding positions, a rise from 111 in the preceding quarter. Lam Research Corporation (NASDAQ: LRCX) attracted 123 hedge fund positions, up from 104. KLA Corporation (NASDAQ: KLAC) also saw an increase, with 71 hedge fund positions compared to 67 in the prior quarter. In terms of valuation, KLA exhibited the highest forward price-to-earnings ratio at approximately 37x, reflecting its dominant position in process control and metrology tools, while Lam Research and Applied Materials traded closely behind at around 34x each. Furthermore, low short interest across all three indicates minimal market expectation of a downturn, suggesting that ongoing fab expansions and memory shortages create a robust environment for these operators.

These three semiconductor equipment giants, Lam Research, KLA, and Applied Materials, stand as crucial pillars in the global technology infrastructure. Their role in enabling advanced chip manufacturing is indispensable, ensuring the continued progress of digital innovation and addressing critical supply chain demands. The sustained interest from institutional investors and the strategic importance of their technologies underscore their enduring significance in the market.
