Mitsubishi Pajero Gathers Significant Pre-Orders Ahead of Japanese Launch

Larry ChenLarry ChenOct 31, 2026

Mitsubishi's latest Pajero model, known as Montero in certain international markets, is poised for its official debut in Japan on December 17th. This flagship off-road sport utility vehicle is already demonstrating considerable market success, having amassed roughly 5,500 pre-orders within its home country. This figure comfortably exceeds Mitsubishi's initial target of 4,000 units for the fiscal year 2026, which spans from April 2026 to March 2027, highlighting strong consumer interest and anticipation.

The new Pajero boasts a highly competitive starting price of 6,193,000 yen, which translates to approximately $39,300 at the current exchange rate. This strategic pricing places it slightly below its direct competitor, the diesel-powered Toyota Land Cruiser 300, offering a compelling alternative in the segment. For the Japanese market, the Pajero will be available in four distinct trim levels: Super Exceed, Exceed, GSR, and GLS. The Super Exceed and Exceed variants are designed with a focus on luxury and premium features, while the GSR and GLS trims emphasize enhanced off-road capabilities, catering to a diverse range of customer preferences. Under the hood, all Japanese models will feature a robust 2.4-liter turbo diesel engine, delivering 201 horsepower at 3,500 rpm and 354 pound-feet of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. This engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission that includes a Sport mode, and it achieves an impressive fuel economy of 12.1 km/L on the WLTC cycle, equivalent to 28.5 MPG. Power is distributed to all four wheels through Mitsubishi's advanced Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II) system, which provides drivers with four selectable modes: 2H (rear-wheel drive), 4H (full-time 4WD), 4HLc (locked center differential), and 4LLc (locked center differential with low-range gears). This system, according to Mitsubishi, skillfully merges superior off-road performance with exceptional on-road stability and handling.

The vehicle's all-wheel-drive system is seamlessly integrated into the Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamics control system, which meticulously manages driving, cornering, and braking performance. The S-AWC system also incorporates Active Yaw Control (AYC), which utilizes the front brakes to precisely control torque distribution between the left and right wheels, along with Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), designed to optimize driving force for improved stability on slippery terrains, and ABS. Furthermore, the new Pajero offers seven selectable drive modes tailored for specific conditions: Normal, Eco, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand, and Rock. Built upon the robust ladder-frame chassis shared with the Mitsubishi Triton pickup, the Pajero inherits a strong foundation for formidable off-road prowess. Models equipped with 20-inch tires, standard on the Super Exceed and Exceed trims, provide a substantial 9 inches (230 mm) of ground clearance, a 30.4-degree approach angle, a 22.6-degree ramp breakover angle, and a 25.8-degree departure angle. The new Pajero is currently available in Thailand and is slated for launch in Australia later this year, with plans for expansion into approximately 100 other international markets. While its availability in the United States has not yet been confirmed, Mitsubishi has previously showcased a body-on-frame flagship SUV to U.S. dealers under the Montero name. Should the Montero eventually reach the American market, it would undoubtedly require a modified powertrain to comply with U.S. emissions regulations.

The successful pre-order performance of the Mitsubishi Pajero demonstrates a promising future for the brand's commitment to delivering robust and versatile SUVs. This achievement underscores the enduring appeal of vehicles that blend advanced off-road capabilities with modern design and competitive pricing, fostering a sense of adventure and reliability for drivers worldwide.
