Monkey Island Creator Opts for Independent Funding for Next Project

Renowned game designer Ron Gilbert, the visionary behind the iconic Monkey Island adventure game franchise, has articulated the intricate challenges associated with creating new entries in the series. The involvement of numerous corporations, particularly Disney, which holds the rights, makes the development process highly complex. This realization has prompted Gilbert to adopt an alternative funding strategy for his next project, “Thimbleweed Park 2,” bypassing traditional game publishers in favor of an independent investor.

Adventure Game Creator Navigates Corporate Hurdles for New Project

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, following the announcement of “Thimbleweed Park 2,” Gilbert shed light on the difficulties of reviving the Monkey Island series. He explained that while Disney proved to be a cooperative creative partner for the 2022 title “Return to Monkey Island,” their preference for collaborating with larger entities, such as Devolver Digital, introduces an additional layer of complexity. This corporate structure necessitates intermediaries, making direct engagement with his independent studio, Terrible Toybox, unfeasible.

Gilbert further elaborated on Disney’s ongoing strategy of partnering with established external developers for games based on their intellectual properties, citing the prominence of “Kingdom Hearts 4” at a recent D23 event. He observed that Disney appears more inclined to work with major corporations like Square Enix than with his smaller, independent studio.

Moreover, Gilbert expressed dissatisfaction with the current publishing landscape for independent developers, finding many deals to be unfavorable. This dissatisfaction was a key factor in his decision to secure funding for “Thimbleweed Park 2” from an undisclosed wealthy investor. He described this arrangement as significantly more equitable, allowing for faster recoupment of initial investments and a more favorable profit-sharing model.

While the immediate future holds no new Monkey Island installments, “Thimbleweed Park 2” is slated for a Windows PC release in early 2028. Meanwhile, “Return to Monkey Island” remains widely accessible across various platforms, including Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

This development offers a compelling insight into the evolving dynamics of the video game industry. It underscores the challenges faced by independent creators when navigating the complex web of corporate ownership and traditional publishing models. Gilbert’s decision to pursue independent funding for “Thimbleweed Park 2” serves as a testament to the growing desire among developers for greater autonomy and more equitable partnerships. It highlights a potential shift towards alternative financing methods that empower creators to maintain artistic control and secure more favorable returns on their work, ultimately fostering a more diverse and innovative gaming landscape.
