NHTSA Expands Investigation into GM and Honda Brake System Malfunctions

A significant issue has emerged concerning the eBoost braking system across various General Motors vehicles, leading to critical failures in both braking and steering assistance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), through its Office of Defects Investigation, has broadened its initial assessment, launched in April 2024, into a full-scale investigation. This probe now includes not only a wide range of GM brands but also extends to certain Acura and Honda models that incorporate the same eBoost technology, placing over 1.1 million vehicles under scrutiny. While it's currently unclear if this braking system problem is linked to previous complaints regarding Cadillac Optiq brakes in cold weather, the expanded investigation underscores the severity of multiple reported incidents.

According to documentation from the Office of Defects Investigation, an estimated 1,164,820 vehicles from the 2023 to 2026 model years, including the Cruise Origin robotaxi, are potentially impacted. So far, 745 incidents related to electronic brake module failures have been documented, resulting in 21 crashes or fires and five instances of injuries affecting six individuals, though no fatalities have been reported. The issue first surfaced with 2023 Cadillac Lyriq electric vehicles, where drivers experienced a stiff brake pedal followed by a 'Brake System Failure' alert. GM's internal reviews initially pointed to spindle fractures within the eBoost system as the cause. The manufacturer claims that anti-lock braking, stability control, and traction control systems remain functional until the vehicle comes to a complete halt, after which these functions are lost. This leads to diagnostic trouble codes, triggering alerts such as 'Service Brake System,' illuminated malfunction indicators, audible warnings, and a speed restriction of 43 mph. The investigation now encompasses a comprehensive list of vehicles, including various models from Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Acura, and Honda.

The NHTSA indicates that since the preliminary evaluation began in 2024, additional reports of brake assist loss have been received. These newer reports describe symptoms that do not align with the initial diagnosis of spindle failure, suggesting an immediate loss of brake assist rather than only after the vehicle stops. Such a condition significantly increases the risk of collisions due to extended braking distances. Consequently, the Office of Defects Investigation has determined that further analysis is essential, leading to the broader scope of this investigation to cover all GM vehicles equipped with the eBoost system. This extensive inquiry and any subsequent recall and repair efforts are expected to be time-consuming. Owners of the affected vehicles are advised to exercise extreme caution until a definitive resolution for this safety concern is implemented.
