Overwatch 2: Old Battle Passes Return Permanently, with Some Changes

Amy HennigAmy HennigAug 10, 2026

In an exciting development for Overwatch 2 enthusiasts, Blizzard is set to reintroduce previous Battle Passes on a permanent basis, commencing with the upcoming Season 4. This strategic shift aims to mitigate the pervasive 'fear of missing out' (FOMO) often associated with live service gaming models, offering players a more flexible and accessible way to engage with past seasonal content.

Season 4 of Overwatch 2 will mark the debut of this new initiative, wherein older Battle Passes will be periodically 'unvaulted,' becoming permanently available to players. While the exact mechanics are still being refined, the general principle is that a specific legacy Battle Pass will be reactivated midway through each new season. This allows players who missed out initially, or wish to revisit previous content, to acquire these passes. Notably, certain exclusive elements from the original Battle Passes, such as premium currency, unique player titles, and Mythic-tier cosmetic skins, will not be part of these re-released versions. Historically, new heroes were also tied to Battle Pass progression, but it is anticipated these will be replaced with alternative rewards in the new system.

Blizzard has indicated that comprehensive details regarding the implementation of these unvaulted Battle Passes will be disclosed closer to the mid-season point. This approach, while not making all past content immediately available, represents a significant step towards a more player-friendly progression system. It deviates from a strictly linear model, offering players greater agency in choosing which cosmetic items they wish to pursue. Furthermore, a new system will allow players to unlock major cosmetics through 'tracks' of multiple rewards, with the option to swap undesired Legendary skins for alternatives from a curated selection.

The developers have emphasized that this revised Battle Pass structure will not extend the time required for completion. Instead, the focus is on enabling players to acquire skins for their preferred heroes more efficiently. A minor adjustment is that premium currency, essential for purchasing Mythic skins, will now be awarded solely upon the completion of a Battle Pass, rather than being interspersed throughout its tiers. This change reflects a broader evolution in Blizzard's monetization strategies for Overwatch 2, particularly in light of the game's strong performance following its transition to a free-to-play model. The continued success and strategic collaborations, such as the upcoming third partnership with the popular K-pop group Le Sserafim, suggest a confident understanding of player engagement and revenue generation.

The highly anticipated Season 4, alongside the introduction of the new mech hero D.Mon, is scheduled to launch on August 11, promising a fresh wave of content and a more rewarding experience for the Overwatch 2 community.
