Pierpaolo Piccioli Departs Balenciaga: A Look Back at His Tenure

Balenciaga is embarking on a new chapter as Pierpaolo Piccioli concludes his tenure as creative director, a decision officially confirmed by the brand's parent conglomerate, Kering. The luxury group has indicated that an announcement regarding Balenciaga's next creative leader is forthcoming. Kering's CEO, Luca de Meo, expressed profound respect for Piccioli's exceptional talent and couturier skills, emphasizing the company's commitment to upholding Balenciaga's avant-garde spirit, honoring its illustrious legacy, and continuously pushing creative boundaries to solidify its influential position in the fashion world. Balenciaga CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli also extended gratitude to Piccioli, acknowledging his vision in reasserting the house's couture origins through his meticulous approach to craftsmanship, construction, and design, and thanking him for his dedication and collaboration.

Piccioli's journey with Balenciaga began in May 2025, approximately a year after his departure from Valentino, where he had dedicated 25 years of his career. His official start at Balenciaga was in July 2025, following the final couture collection presented by his predecessor, Demna. His inaugural collection for Balenciaga debuted during Paris Fashion Week last October, coinciding with a season rich in designer introductions for Spring 2026. This initial showcase, held at Kering's headquarters within the historic Laennec landmark, thoughtfully referenced founder Cristóbal Balenciaga's extensive archives, offering a more refined aesthetic compared to Demna's style. Elements like oversized eyewear, a bomber jacket reimagined as a leather bubble, and a strikingly voluminous white shirt that cascaded into a train paid homage to past influences, garnering a moderately positive reception. However, the reception for his subsequent collection in March was more divided, with critics noting a subdued mood compared to his usual vibrant style, though his command of color was evident in his July couture debut for the brand. Observers noted that Piccioli faced the intricate challenge of navigating the monumental legacies of Cristóbal's couture and Demna's social satirist street-style, striving to establish his unique identity within the brand.

During Piccioli's leadership, Balenciaga's designs graced numerous high-profile events, with celebrities embracing his distinctive couture creations. Meghan Markle notably appeared in a bespoke ivory ensemble at his debut show, while red carpet events featured Ariana Grande in a pink gown, Rosalia in a low-rise maxi skirt, and Demi Moore at Cannes. Financially, Balenciaga's sales reached an estimated €1.47 billion in 2025, a slight decrease from €1.65 billion the previous year, according to Morgan Stanley. This occurred after a decade of significant growth under Demna's creative direction, which saw sales at €360 million in 2015. Kering reported continued growth for Balenciaga in leather goods during Q1 2026, though Q2 and Q3 proved more challenging for the brand overall. Kering CFO Armelle Poulou highlighted the strong performance of leather goods like the City and Rodeo bags, along with the promising launch of the new Hourglass Avenue bag, while acknowledging the need to focus on introducing new lines in ready-to-wear and shoes. Piccioli's appointment preceded Kering CEO Luca de Meo's strategic roadmap for the group, which includes ambitious goals for Balenciaga such as doubling women's ready-to-wear by 2030 and significantly accelerating the leather goods category, alongside expanding business in the Americas. Following Kering's announcement, Piccioli personally shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, featuring images from the Balenciaga couture salons and behind-the-scenes moments from his Fall 2026 couture collection, expressing his enduring passion for couture and gratitude to his team for their shared journey and dedication.

The fashion world, with its rapid cycles and demanding expectations, continues to evolve, constantly seeking new forms of expression while honoring rich legacies. The departure of a creative director like Pierpaolo Piccioli from a storied house such as Balenciaga highlights the dynamic interplay between artistic vision, commercial pressures, and the constant pursuit of innovation. It reminds us that true artistry lies not only in creating beautiful garments but also in adapting to change, inspiring others, and leaving a lasting mark on culture. The ongoing journey of these iconic brands reflects a commitment to excellence and a belief in the power of creativity to shape our world, offering a hopeful outlook for future endeavors.
