In the wake of a recent earthquake that severely impacted Colombia, pop icon Shakira has joined forces with Global Citizen, Live Nation, and CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean) to commit a significant initial sum of $1.25 million. This substantial contribution is dedicated to the urgent reconstruction of educational facilities across the affected regions. The initiative underscores a critical effort to restore stability and learning environments for thousands of children displaced or otherwise impacted by the disaster, highlighting the importance of education in community recovery.
Collaborative Efforts for Educational Restoration
Following the destructive earthquake in Colombia, a powerful alliance comprising Shakira, the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, Live Nation, and CAF has pledged an initial $1.25 million to reconstruct damaged schools. This commitment builds upon similar recovery efforts in Venezuela after last year’s earthquakes. Shakira personally visited Quibdó, meeting with local officials and collaborating organizations like Fundación Pies Descalzos, to assess the damage and launch the rebuilding process. Her visit underscored the urgency and gravity of the situation, initiating a coordinated response to address the widespread destruction of educational infrastructure.
The joint funding includes $500,000 from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an equal matching donation of $500,000 from Live Nation, and an additional $250,000 from CAF. Fundación Pies Descalzos, a non-profit organization with 22 years of experience in Chocó, will lead the rebuilding efforts, working closely with local authorities and communities to ensure effective and sustainable reconstruction. Shakira has also appealed to international governments, including those of the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and Japan, to contribute to this vital cause, emphasizing that the disaster has left 40 schools completely collapsed and affected over 3,207 nationwide. Her personal involvement extends to the reconstruction of Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó Diego Luis Córdoba, a crucial institution for higher education in the region, which also sustained damage.
Shakira’s Vision for Community Resilience
Shakira articulated a profound message of hope and resilience, underscoring that schools represent more than mere structures; they provide essential stability and routine, particularly crucial for children recovering from traumatic events. She emphasized that the initial $1.25 million pledge is just the beginning, signaling a sustained commitment to ensure that no child in Chocó or Colombia is left to face the aftermath alone. Her call to action extends beyond financial aid, seeking a broader international engagement to accelerate the recovery process and reinforce the affected communities.
Highlighting the critical role of education in post-disaster recovery, Shakira personally committed to the restoration of the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó Diego Luis Córdoba. She stressed that rebuilding this university is paramount to protecting the educational future of young individuals, many of whom are graduates from her Fundación Pies Descalzos programs. Hugh Evans, Co-Founder and CEO of Global Citizen, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of returning children to safe learning environments. Sergio Díaz Granados, CAF’s executive president, reiterated CAF’s unwavering support for Colombia, particularly in challenging times, and pledged ongoing mobilization of resources to facilitate the safe return of students to their classrooms, solidifying the collective resolve to foster sustainable development through education.
